JAPAN IS PROBABLY the only country in the world which holds a national holiday in honour of its elderly population. for the Elders Day [Keiro no Hi] has been in existence for at least three hundred years and serves as an opportunity for public celebrations in which the older members of the community are at the center of the activities. Respect for the elders has been fostered explicitly throughout the centuries by means of the Confucian code of ethics, and was incorporated formally into modern Japanese society in the form of the 1963 National Law for the Welfare of Elders. The law states
