A partir des travaux d'Halbwachs et Mauss, l'A. etudie les ceremonies de la culture fidjienne par rapport a la memorisation et a l'inscription corporelle. Les techniques corporelles, comme celle de huiler les parties du corps non recouvertes par le tapa lors d'un mariage, permettent de se souvenir. L'A. decrit aussi la position du corps en relation a d'autres corps, le mouvement du corps en opposition a l'immobilite, l'endurance de la douleur et de l'inconfort dans les demonstrations publiques, la conception de la beaute et des soins corporels.
