This collection of papers was prepared in response to the relative dearth [in the United Kingdom] of recent research and writing on fertility by comparison with the level of research activity on marriage, family and related phenomena. The volume is intended as a contribution to updating and extending our knowledge of recent fertility developments in Britain: (1) key current methodological issues; (2) the intersection between fertility and recent innovations in marriage and related behaviour--primarily cohabitation and marital breakdown; and (3) several topic areas--British fertility in a wider European context, costs of children and fertility differentials--that have received less attention recently than they warrant. Selected items will be cited in this or subsequent issues of Population Index
