Pendant longtemps, on a considéré que l'ère statistique en matière de population, ne commençait, en France, que vers 1800, la période antérieure étant dite préstatistique. Déjà excessive du fait de l'existence de relevés de l'état civil de 1770 à 1789, cette distinction est en voie de disparition, depuis le dépouillement des registres paroissiaux. A tout le moins, la période de 1670-1800 est-elle entrée dans le domaine de la possibilité de statistiques et comme les résultats de la période 1800-1830 laissent beaucoup à désirer, c'est de 1670 à 1830 que se place le champ de recherches. Une grande étude par sondage a été entreprise, à cet effet, en 1959 m, sur un échantillon de villages et de villes. Les résultats globaux, présentés ici par MM. Louis Henry et Jacques Houdaille, concernent la fécondité des mariages dans le quart nord-ouest de la France, de 1 670 à 1829
