adding a number of notes on the variant readings of the other manuscript.Curiously enough, in his introduction to the edition he did not mention the third manuscript of this text preserved in the library of the former Royal Batavia Society, now Perpustakaan Museum Pusat in Djakarta, and described by himself in his catalogue of the Malay MSS. in Batavia (1909), p. 123.All these manuscripts probably date from the middle of the 19th century, and the Malay translation, which seems to have been made about the same period, is apparently the work of an Arab peranakan. As for the name by which the story goes, the name Hikajat Harun al-Rashid is derived from the opening words of the story, where the kadi concerned is said to have lived in the time of the famous caliph Harun al-Rashid, in Arabic narrative literature a kind of golden age in which all sorts of remarkable events took place. The name Hikajat Pentjuri speaks for itself, while Mukabil can only be a corruption of Mukatil, as the Arabic story from which the Malay tale was taken bears the name Qissat al-qadï Muhammad b.Muqatil, the narrative of kadi Muhammad b.Muqatil
