W TITH THE HOLDING of its first general election in July I955, Malaya, like Singapore and Indonesia, has entered upon the adventure of parliamentary democracy. That the results in all three areas should have confounded some of the political prophets was inevitable. Voting behaviour is quite impossible to predict in a region where elected political parties are such an innovation. The most surprising thing about the election for the new Malayan Legislative Council was not the triumph of the triple Alliance of the United Malays National Organisation, the Malayan Chinese Association and the Malayan Indian Congress-this was generally expected-but that this party should have so completely annihilated its opponents.
