El proceso de poblamiento y articulacion territorial de las costas de Mexico constituye un fenomeno relativamente reciente, inconcluso y aun poco estudiado. De hecho, se inicio en los anos 40 y los factores que lo impulsaron han sido basicamente tres: la explotacion petrolera, la agricultura comercial y el turismo; actividades que desde sus inicios han configurado una red carretera costera mas adecuada para responder a las exigencias del mercado externo que a las del mercado interno
