This essay on the work of José Esteban Muñoz seeks to understand his views on performativity as they relate to gossip, the stage, contagious affect, expanding community, and furtive potentials. Read in light of the sense of political despair on the left during the Trump regime, Muñoz’s Cruising Utopia shows ways to think about the political importance of disidentification as a means of contesting norms of white supremacy and consolidating authoritarianism
