The illegal nature of their activities has made drug traffickers, as a social category which began to take shape in the early 20th century, difficult to study. From the 1970s onwards, corridos or ballads on drug trafficker have permitted the construction of an identity for this social category that had hitherto been shaped by the State monopoly in the process of production and imposition of the meaning of official discourse
