This paper explores the relationship between family interaction, as conceptualized in by Basil Bernstein in terms of person-and position-oriented interaction, use of elaborated language, and the concept of role-taking ability. A model involving these four variables is conceptualized by using the Piagetian concept of egocentrism as a core synthesizing notion. In order to evaluate the model empirically measures on mother-child interaction, language elaboration and role-taking abilities were obtained from 92 Icelandic eighth-grades. As hypothesized role-taking was positively related to language elaboration, and mother-child person-oriented interaction was positively related to both language elaboration and role-taking ability. As was further hypothesized position-oriented mother-child interaction was negatively related to language elaboration and role-taking ability. It is concluded that the model is supported by the empirical evidence
