Data obtained from a survey of 1123 young people in Hong Kong is compared with the results of surveys of students in the U S A and Taiwan in order to test the proposition that there is a relationship between the the extent of industrialisation in a society and the attitudes of the members of the society. The hypothesis that American respondents will show more modern attitudes towards marriage and the family than Hong Kong respondents is wholly supported. When Hong Kong and Taiwanese respondents are compared, the findings are not conclusive. For three attitude items there is no significant difference, for two items Hong Kong respondents show significantly more modern attitudes than Taiwanese and for one item Taiwanese are significantly more modern than Hong Kong respondents. Special aspects of social life in Hong Kong and Taiwan, it is suggested, account in part for the differences observed
