In this analysis the factors that determine how much input Javanese couples are allowed into decisions regarding their marriages are explored. Perceptions of power and the factors that influence these perceptions are investigated separately for husbands and wives. It is found that over time couples have gained considerably in their ability to control decision outcomes and that the educational attainment levels of both partners fathers are consistent predictors of the couples decision-making power. Size of community prior to marriage is particularly important among women and age at marriage is especially relevant among men. (SUMMARY IN FRE AND SPA) (EXCERPT)
