Solidarity and Working-Class Struggles in Poland. Are the workers capable of conceiving that improvement of their living conditions implies calling into question the System which oppresses them, without this totalizing view of the functioning of society having to be supplied to them by external guides, and more particularly by intellectuals ? This is the question which this article seeks to answer, by means of an empirical study of the content and form of the demands expressed by the workers in Poland in the course of the events of 1970, I971 and 1980. It starts out from the significant fact of the creation of Solidarity, a purely trade-union workers' movement which nonetheless, by virtue of its declared independence from the political authorities, in fact attacked the very foundations of the Leninist state. Analysis of the theses put forward by the workers, their genesis, their expression, their permanence and their evolution through the 1970s, leads to the conclusion that within the working class there exists a deeply rooted community - if not class - consciousness, a sense of democratic and egalitarian values, and a political realism, to which intellectuals may have given a formal framework but which they certainly did not create
