Normative expectations concerning the exchange of goods and services within a community do not necessarily correspond to the observed outcomes of exchange events, and may even contradict them to some degree. Descriptions of exchange which stress norms tend to exaggerate the "structural constraints" at the expense of the "individual decision-making" aspects of the phenomenon. The failure to keep these two aspects of social life distinct has been responsible for a misinterpretation of the difference between "tribal" and "peasant" society. Data from two contrasting communities--Muyombe in Zambia and Boa Ventura in Brazil--indicate that normative descriptions should generally be complemented by quantitative descriptions of actual exchanges. The theoretical and practical problems associated with this effort are discussed
