The prevalence in African towns of unformalized "marriages" and the range of contexts are indicated. The significance of free marriage in a predominantly Bantu urban area is examined by contrasting circumstances and marital roles of people who have undergone a wedding ceremony and people who have not. Financial and security considerations are shown to be unimportant to the formation and termination of marriages. Formally married couples are better off, more attached to rural life, and readier to accept intervention by relatives; the position of the wife is subordinate. In contrast, free married couples have a more equal relationship, greatly prefer urban life, even with a low standard of living, and consider a marital relationship very different from that of traditional marriage important for high urban status. Free marriage is a deliberate rejection of traditional marital roles, but, unlike free marriages in other areas, does not indicate expectation of impermanence
