Pukara of Volcan situated in the border of the Prepuna ecological zone is a large and high settlement probably the political head of a southern chiefdom developed during the Desarrollos Regionales and Inka periods (from aproximately XIII to XVI Century). A fundamental property of this Humalmaca valley portion is its proximity to the Western Yunga in the upper basin of the Corral de Piedra river, where 23 sites surveyed covered a lapse since 800 AD to 1.440 AD at least. Excavation records show interaction signs between Pukara of Volcan and Yunga sites, but also with settlements such as Tastil and Morohuasi in Toro Valley (Puna Salteña southern border). According to the data obtained at the moment, we postulate that interactions were related to the highlands societies interest in the access to the Yunga resources, favored by the routes which link Toro and Humahuaca Valleys
