Using data for Pakistan for the period 1961-1964 and 1980 the authors examine changes over time in marriage patterns among Muslim families in Karachi. The data are from a sample of marriage registrations and concern three areas of primarily upper middle and lower socioeconomic status. The results indicate that the new laws requiring a minimum age at marriage of 16 for females and 18 for males are being adhered to at all socioeconomic levels and that higher ages at marriage are associated with higher socioeconomic status.
