Within a few centuries after 2000 B.C., a remarkable cultural diffusion occurred along the East Coast from Florida to Maine. This development was characterized by both distinctive lifeways and a specific assemblage of artifacts. Among the most diagnostic of these artifacts are the large stemmed blades known commonly as broadpoints. This terminal Archaic broadpoint manifestation is separable from the remainder of the Archaic primarily on the basis of certain peculiarities of the broadpoint-producing culture itself. While general Archaic life patterns appear to have been preserved, some elements were enhanced, as the focus of the pattern came to be modified because of cultural specialization in response to various natural and social stimuli. These factors are discussed, with particular notice being given to the correlation between broadpoint distribution and the adjusted range of certain anadromous fish, such as shad and alewife, along the Atlantic slope
