This article aims at contributing to the development of sociological theory on mental disturbance in children, without falling into the sociological relativism of labeling theory or in the positivistic determinism of stress theory. This is done by integration of findings from psychiatric family research with that from sciological research on socialization in families of different societal positions. The central thesis of the argument states that inability in conflict resolution, and consequently in attaining symbolic intimacy between the parents, forms the nucleus of 'pathological' socialization. This means that there is a need for a sociology of marital communication in which communica-tional problems between partners may be deduced from and explained by the specific positions of men and women in the family and in society. Some suggestions are made foi the way in which such a sociology could be developed
