Childhood in Medieval England was a neglected subject until about forty years ago and still rarely figures in studies of political, religious, economic, or social history. Yet children formed a large part not only of the population but of its households, work places and religious institutions, with representation in the surviving evidence. The author re flects on the challenges faced by historians of the subject in the early twenty- first century. One of the challenges is the reluctance of academics at large to acknowledge the presence of children in the way that is now accepted for women. Another is the obstacle formed by disciplinary boundaries; although the history of childhood bene fits from combining multiple kinds of evidence, the task is impeded by the differing conventions of each discipline. A further problem is the mapping of change, since attempts to identify eras of childhood, such as 'Medieval' and 'Modern', have not hitherto been convincing. Nevertheless, the last forty years have seen a substantial achievement in reconstructing the history of Medieval children, particularly in the archaeology of death and the upbringing, culture and education of the living. Not only has the study of childhood emerged in its own right but it has shown its ability to correct and enhance the understanding of traditional adult history
