This article deals with a Latin proverb by Terence ( El Eunuco , IV, 732), Sine Cerere et Libero, Venus friget . The study starts with a summary approach to the proverb’s history in written sources, through the Medieval Age to Renaissance, in order to understand the deep dependence on texts of the first depictions in Sixteenth century art. The most striking trait of the Latin proverb’s representations is the geographical concurrence limited exclusively to the North-Centre of Europe. The main scope of this paper is to answer why this topic is recurrent in this particular area of Europe and also to explain the bipolarization of the images’ use, so to speak, from the moral warning to the erotic purpose.
