There are 146,660 persons over the age of 16 years classified as widowed in New Zealand. They constitute 10.7 percent of all females and 2.6 percent of all males in the population. The paper summarises the available social security benefits to the widowed population, and examines the work of the New Zealand widows and widowers Association a self-help group formed in 1978. An explanatory study of 64 members of this group, based in Auckland is presented, which highlights the social characteristics of the group, and points out the difficulties found by the widowed. Suggestions for change in societal approaches to the widowed are also included, as well as advice given by the widowed to newly widowed in New Zealand
