Marriage : A moment of truth for migrant maghrebine families. Jocelyne STREIFF-FENART For immigrant Maghrebin families the marriage of their children represents an important step, namely the control of their own conditions for reproduction. A generation gap has appeared between immigrants and their children concerning the choice of partner and the organization of marriage. The conflict of family values produced by differences in cultural norms of traditional and modern society does not only belong to the immigrant community, but affects all the countries of the Maghreb to different degrees. But because family tensions are added to by the juxtaposition of Islamic and Western values, their intensity is increased in immigrant society. Amongst young people the emergence of the concept of the modem family is as much affected by the state of intra-family relationships as it is a product of their identification (especially amongst girls) with French social norms
