The topic of nationalism and scientific racism in nineteenth century antiquarianism and archaeology has been a growing area of research. The reactions to the publication of Darwin's theories and the discovery of 'Deep Time' in 1859, both of which challenged conventional assumptions about the creation and development of human society, have also been under investigation. However, the particular way in which children were used in archaeology in the second half of the nineteenth century and first decades of the twentieth century as a persistent metaphor to explain and rationalise national and religious agendas has been given little consideration
