Traditionally, ethnic retailing was narrowly defined as businesses that were owned and operated by members of an ethnic group, and that offered culturally specific goods and services to co-ethnic consumers. This definition has, however, been blurred, with some ethnic retailers now expanding their business scope to cross ethnic boundaries, and also with mainstream retailers entering the realm of ethnic retailing. These recent changes necessitate the need to re-conceptualize ethnic retailing. Based on observations of the recent business developments in metropolitan Toronto, this article discusses the changing meaning of ethnic retailing and, more importantly, proposes a new framework for expanded study of ethnic retailing
