The Art of Valuing Art. In the second half of the 20th century, the introduction of modes of evaluation based on numerical appreciation of the value of visual artists indicates the appearance of new agents competing for the monopoly of the power to consecrate. The techniques of classification, such as prize lists, «bestseller lists» or lists of celebrities, used by the specialist art milieu, record in a rational way the upward and downward fluctuations in artists' ratings. They also reveal the positions of the cultural institutions which consecrate them and, behind the institutions, the positions of the countries represented. Thus, the French artistic field, which could claim to lead Europe until the early 1960s, seems threatened by the major operations of artistic promotion -Documentas, Biennales, contemporary art fairs, etc.-, centres of judgement produced by the international art market
