This paper examines several theories from the anthropological literature purporting to account for the existence of age-set systems, and tests one of these cross-culturally. Cross-cultural evidence does not support this theory, but rather supports an original theory herein presented that age-sets will develop in frequently warring societies where size and composition of the local group fluctuates greatly seasonally. Further evidence is presented that age-set systems are not an alternative to, but rather provide integration additional to that of descent-group organization
