Among the Abisi, polyandry and polygyny are integrally related. Men and women pursue separate marital careers; each typically engages in three marriages, the outcome being a polyandrous polygynous secondary marital system. Rules of clan exogamy and the system of marital prestations assure that all men marry in their youth; as they grow older, their improved economic status enables them to attract additional wives and maintain a higher rate of residential polygyny
