The development approach to the study of the family has been significantly and appropriately used in western societies. This research applies this approach to a preliterate group, the Yanomama of north Brazil, the specific stages in the life cycle are total dependency, and early childhood for both sexes, after which the stages are distinctly separated by gender. In the female the five remaining stages are later childhood, puberty and marriage, childbearing and child rearing, diminishing family involvement and appendage. For the male these stages are later childhood, a prolonged premarriage stage, first family of procreation, second family of procreation and appendage. Each stage is described in detail relating the process to the functions, values and goals of the Yanomama
