The family outcaste. Kinship according to Pierre Bourdieu. In the course of a study conducted with Abdelmalek Sayad on marriage and economic practices among the Kabyl peasantry, Pierre Bourdieu discovered, much to his surprise, that marriage with the father's brother's daughter, presented by anthropologists as a feature of Arabo-Berber populations, was in fact fairly rare. The present article analyses the line of reasoning Bourdieu develops to untangle the question and at the same time extend his critique to the general methods and theories of kinship. This is no small feat, since it throws into question the chief principles of the structuralist paradigm if it turns out that not only the so-called «Arab» marriage, but any form of marriage is not a matter of purely internal analysis but also entails outside factors of an economic, political and ideological nature. In effect, Bourdieu proposes substituting the practical logic of strategy for the academic logic of structure. By so doing, he becomes able to understand Kabylia in the light of his native Beam region and to argue (in vain it seems) for doing away with the opposition between social anthropology and sociology
