This study concerned the effects of kinship affiliation on marital stability. The argument suggests that disjunctive affiliations which imply segregated role relationships and close-knit networks also imply unilateral kinship affiliation. Unilateral kinship affiliation is apt to lead to an asymmetry of power in the family which in turn leads to an acceptance of divorce as a way out of the problem. A sample of 82 families was investigated and revealed that the matrilateral families were most disjunctively affiliated and most approving of divorce while the bilateral families were the most con junctively affiliated and the least approving of divorce
