The paper discusses the rise to academic significance of Heritage Studies, and suggests four emerging entry points for the analysis of heritage problems, these being the fields of heritage, the markets for heritage, the different levels of identity towards which heritage is intended to contribute, and the various stages in a cycle of heritage. The paper concludes by suggesting major trends in attitudes to heritage in the 21st century and with challenges concerning the management of heritage in particular sites in the United Kingdom and in Hong Kong
