This paper shows how working-class bars and taverns in rural Andalusia have operated as informal contexts for political organization and activity along party lines--both clandestinely under Franco and legally today. The point is, first, to rescue these important proletarian establishments from their present obscurity in social analysis by showing how they may critically affect local political life. The second objective is to counteract the prevailing neglect in Mediterranean ethnography of the impact of macropolitics, "official" party ideologies, and class-based organizations on community-level social and cultural processes
