Problems in the Analysis of the Social Relations of Nuaulu Land Use

To properly understand the social relations of land use among the Nuaulu of Seram it is necessary to explore the wider structural and temporal context. Particular attention is paid here to the balance between domesticated and non-domesticated resources, the transition from hamlet to multi-clan villages, the movement from a low density highland area to a relatively higher density coastal location, the change from absolute political autonomy to one of relative subordination, and--most importantly--the shift in the position of land from resource to commodity. The idea that land tenure systems are functionally integrated or that they can be 'explained' simply in indigenous terms is rejected in favor of a broad frame of reference in which the relationship between men and land is seen as the product of specific histories
