This paper suggests that a low or zero population growth rate is a good indicator that a population is near or at its carrying capacity. A discriminant analysis of data from a 124-country survey indicates that indicators of industrialization and geographical size may be used to predict both a country's level of population density and growth. The survey data suggest that the declining population growth characteristic of highly industrialized countries is a sign that they are near their carrying capacities
