This paper analyzes the characteristics and economic and social changes of the indigenous population that inhabited the countryside near Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the second half of the 19th century. The case study uses a set of documentary sources of different authorship, format and purpose to research the "tribe" in the city's Veinticinco de Mayo administrative subdivision (partido), led by the caciques Guayquil, Caneullan, Teuque and Rondeau. The primary results of the analysis include the identification and reconstruction of the composition of this group, their labor and occupational practices, and use and access to land ownership in rural and urban areas within the administrative subdivision
