Este trabalho põe em discussão crítica a chamada "hipótese da convergência", que constitui uma suposição central da teoria da transição demográfica, e que afirma existir uma tendência de homogeneização dos padrões demográficos e de estruturação da família nas sociedades que vivenciam tal processo de mudanças demográficas históricas. This paper is a critique of the socalled "convergence hypothesis", a basic assumption of the theory od demographic transition. According to this hypothesis, demographic patterns and family structures tend to become homogeneous in societes undergoing a process of demographic transition.
