Anthropologue specialisee dans l'etude des cultures africaines, Mary Douglas (1921-2007) a apporte un regard percant sur le XXe siecle, a travers l'etude des religions, des cultures, de leur rapport au risque, a la pollution et au danger. Dans son ouvrage Natural Symbols, paru en 1970, elle elabore la typologie grille-groupe, sur laquelle se fonde sa theorie culturelle des institutions.
