Promoção democrática na política externa dos Estados Unidos (2001-2008)

Mediante a teoria do discurso de Ernesto Laclau, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar o papel da promoção democrática na política externa dos Estados Unidos durante a administração George W. Bush (2001-2008). A hipótese a ser explorada é que a democracia liberal pode ser compreendida como um significante vazio, uma vez que, de acordo com documentos de política externa norte-americana do período, condensa em si mesma uma gama variada de sentidos: não é apenas o melhor e mais justo sistema político e econômico, mas também aquele que permite que países desempenhem funções estatais consideradas essenciais de maneira mais eficiente. Como consequência, essa construção de sentidos contribuiu para justificar e normalizar ações controversas de política externa, tais como as invasões do Afeganistão e Iraque
