Among the several urban spaces de-signed for casual sexual encounters, this paper fo-cuses on the structure of the ritual of interactionin the dark room of a nightclub frequented by menwho seek homoerotic practices. I propose a use of J.L. Austin’s theory of speech acts in a context wherethe performative acts are gestures, movements, andthe position in the space, among other corporalsigns, which not only say, but also do things. Howto do things without words? How to do ethnogra-phy in silence? What do gestures say? How canone do things by gestures? What is their “magical”power? Is there an inner energy in gestures, just likein words? This investigation is based on theoreticalissues from anthropological studies, which questionthe pre-eminence of language and sight in ethno-graphical work, and in the study of the ways groupsorganize their own experiences
