Social Networks and Union Membership: The Case of the Confédération française démocratique du travail (CFDT) Bruno Duriez, Frédéric Sawicki This paper is based on results from a questionnaire sent to a sample of members of the French trade-union CFDT (Conféderation française et démocratique du travail, Nord-Pas-de-Calais branch). The survey was completed by a series of interviews about the logic of trade-union membership. It distinctly shows the importance of people-networking for any decision-making process on becoming a member. As one of various types of relationship, obviously work-connections do matter more than other connections, as with the voluntary sector, political parties or, to a lesser extent, family surroundings. This change is partly due to the way CFDT recruits its members. Since they gather persons who have few strong links - or at least few multiplex ones - with each other, trade-unions seem to have difficulties in being able to develop their own sociability. More than ever faith in the institution relies on activists' and local representatives' capacity to keep a relationship among members to a minimum
