The Power of Simple Ideas. Epistemic misery of economic behaviors Frédéric Lordon As a more realistic rectification of the « rational expectations hypothesis », the « simple ideas hypothesis » presented here states that economic behaviors are often driven by very rough epistemic schemes. Many are the agents, including the State, driven by simple ideas, a typology of which is given. In the field of economic policy, simple ideas may appear as a watchword, and even a slogan, performing a synthesis of the whole project of economic policy - consider for instance : « stability ». Simple ideas may also appear as threshold-criteria - as set by the Maastricht treatise. Simple ideas may also be seen in the field of finance but under the form of the dichotomie scheme (good/bad, bullish/bearish...). This dichotomy is in upper position in a two levels « model » of expectations formation : under its hermeneutic guidance, second level representations are elaborated which include more sophisticated contents but remain strongly determined by it, and even subordinated to its consolidation
