The purpose of this paper is to dis-cuss three different approaches to the issue of therelationship between myth and history which havebeen developed from Lévi-Strauss’ discussion ofthe subject. The essay focuses on the works of Ma-nuela Carneiro da Cunha, Marshall Sahlins andPeter Gow and shows how these unfoldings havecontributed to shed light over some aspects of Lévi-Strauss’ theory of which there are only glimpses inhis work. What is peculiar to these three views inreworking their common source is the way in whi-ch the traditional issue of temporality in mythicalthought is dealt with by ethnographically focusingon individual acts in social life. Thus the role ofcreating, one might say, inventing the never-endingprocess of culture is ascribed to individual agents
