Alain Testart, Don Juan, the Trickish. — The Don Juan literary cycle is com monly considered as resulting from a superimposition of two main topics : the seducer; and Don Juan inviting the dead (the Commander), which may be followed by the reverse: the dead inviting Don Juan. It is well-known that the second theme is rooted in some European fund of legends originating in the Middle Ages or even further back. But the theme of the seducer is held by critics mainly as a literary subject matter originating in the spirit of the age of Tirso de Molina. The article aims at pointing out to some indiscerptible connexion between both topics. On the one hand, Don Juan emerges through works dating of the 17th and 18th centuries as one unified figure, comparable with the trickster, a mythical hero and a transgressor; thus, seducing women and inviting a dead appear as two types of behaviour proper to the same figure. On the other hand, seduction as due to an immoderate interest in women, hence blameworthy and even sacrilegious, happens to be a theme occurring in European legends, namely the Spanish ones
