The object of this text are footballpractices as contexts in which gender identity islearned. Developed based on an ethnographic fo-ray into the football routine of youths in a neigh-borhood of Belo Horizonte, this article disclosesimportant issues (in the learning process) involvingthe formation of masculinity and the gender rela-tions at stake in this sport. Thus, it reveals that thelearning of football is widespread in the differentways of participating in social practice and invol-ves more than techniques, tactics and rules. In dailyfootball practices, young athletes learn football andalso build identities. It is not, however, a process ofpassive assimilation in which the body is graduallymolded.
