O trabalho busca delinear no cenário da participação da sociedade civil brasileira, nos anos 90, as formas que ocorrem junto aos setores populares no mundo rural. Destaca-se um movimento social específico: o MST - Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem-terra - no que diz respeito às características principais de suas ações coletivas, problemas e desafios enfrentados, assim como relações com a mídia. PALAVRAS CHAVE: Meio rural, movimentos sociais, participação popular, MST, ação política THE LANDLESS PLANTERS AND THE CHALLENGES OF THE POPULAR PARTICIPATION IN THE RURAL BRAZILIAN AREAS BY THE END OF THE MILLENNIUM The paper tries to outline the ways the popular sectors of the rural areas articulated themselves in terms of the participation of the Brazilian civil society in the rural area in the 90s. A specific movement, the MST (Movement of the Landless Rural Workers), stands out as a way to represent the main characteristics of the collective actions, problems and challenges faced, as well as the relationships with the media.
