This article discusses, based on narrati-ves of life history, the uses of the categories related tosexual and gender identities, especially the categoriestransvestite and transsexual, as well as how the differen-ces between these categories are elaborated. It arguesthat, although the conventions of medical discourseare central references for the definition of the bodies, subjectivities, and identities of the people investigated,it is possible to notice a variety of re-elaborations anddisplacement of meanings in the construction of bio-graphical trajectories that is directly related to presentsocial situations and the various contexts of dialogue
