Puerto Rico "They live off people's sweat": Production and resistance in the garment industry in Puerto Rico, 1900-1970 Abstract This is a study of the relationship between forms of organization of production of the garment industry in Puerto Rico and the forms of resistance of textile workers during the period 1900-1970. To analyze the forms of organization of production (workshop and putting-out system) I used seven categories: co-operation, levels of mechanization, division of labour, learning process of skills needed for production, place over means of production, working-day and wage. The forms of resistance I documented were forms of economic resistance and forms of ideological resistance. After analyzing the relationship between production/resistance, I concluded that, far from the production process, the historical (colonial), social (gender) and ideological (religion) context in which the textile industry is developed, affects the generation of textile workers forms of resistance. Keywords: Garment industry.
