A Study of New Farmers in IsraelThis paper presents the background and the theoretical framework of a study carried out in Israel in new immigrants' smallholders' cooperative villages (the Moshavim). The aim of the study has been to analyse processes of mutual social change and acculturation resulting from the confrontation of the Moshav with various population types. For this purpose, the economic, social, ideological and organizational norms and conditions of the Moshav are first examined in detail, and then related to relevant characteristics of the different settler groups. These characteristics are spelled out in three broad factors. A. The basic socio-cultural predispositions of the settlers, embedded in the nature of the family, the economy, the society, the polity, and the values of the country of origin. In order to classify the settlers in respect to these characteristics, and to predict their adjustment to the Moshav, a modified concept of the traditional-modern continuum is employed. B. Socio-dynamic predispositions, cutting across this continuum and determining the ability to change. Here attention is paid to such factors as stability of primary groups, security of status, and structure of leadership elite in the communities of origin. C. Cultural-dynamic predispositions - chiefly the power of analytical thinking, generalisation and abstraction - affecting learning ability and the capacity for understanding new social situations.
