In spite of the exceptional interest of the St Brice site from its archeological as well as its historical point of view, no further digs had been made to confirm the existence of a necropolis around the royal sepulchre of Childeric since it was explored in the XVIIth century. A large scale operation was launched in 1983 to sound the grounds in a hundred meter area around the tomb of the Merovingian king. Besides traces of roman and medieval settlements a graveyard from the Vth, VIth and Vllth centuries was discovered in the district. About a hundred graves, most of them from the early VIth century have been explored. They contained a variety of funeral offerings. Three graves of horses, containing about ten animals per pit, were found in the vicinity of the royal sepulchre. The C14 tests established that all of them were roughly of the same period
